Food and Feed Hygiene

Food hygiene for farmers and growers

This legislation helps ensure the integrity of food, from Farm to Fork, by safeguarding the hygiene of foodstuffs produced at a farm. Farmers and growers must follow hygiene procedures to ensure hazards such as contamination arising from soil, water, fertilizers, pesticides, the handling of waste, etc are prevented. Records relevant to food safety must also be kept.

What types of businesses are covered?

Any livestock farms, fish farms, arable farms, PYO (pick your own fruit and vegetable), market gardens or bee keepers producing food for human consumption.

Feed Hygiene for farmers and growers

The Council helps ensure that livestock feed is free from contaminants, additives and ingredients that might be a threat to human health.

Animal feed producers and famers using and storing animal feed must take steps to meet these provisions. They must also have in place a system that ensures feeds can be traced and recalled in the event of a feed safety incident.

The legislation requires feed businesses to be approved or registered with their local authority.
