Town and Community Councils

Pembrokeshire community, town and city councils

Community, town and city councils (local councils) are the level of government closest to our communities.

What do these local councils do?

The role of local councils is to represent individual communities or towns. They have legal powers to deliver some services and duties depending on the size of the community they represent and their budget. Examples of services provided by local councils include:

  • Green spaces
  • Children’s play areas
  • Community halls
  • Public conveniences

Interested in becoming a local councillor?

Being a councillor can be very rewarding.

Councillors are:

  • elected every five years (as part of local government elections)
  • entitled to a small annual payment

Councillor vacancies do occur outside of the five-year election period.  Please contact your local town or community council clerk  if you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area.

The next local government elections are due to take place in 2027.

Local council clerks

Each local council is supported by a paid clerk, who ensures the council runs effectively. This person is also usually the responsible financial officer for the council.
