Regeneration Project Plans
Haverfordwest Castle Redevelopment
Pembrokeshire County Council’s ambitious regeneration project in Haverfordwest includes the redevelopment of Haverfordwest Castle, Gaol building and Governor’s House to become a flagship heritage attraction for Pembrokeshire.
The new visitor attraction will tell the story of Pembrokeshire, past, present and future in the refurbished Gaol building with an innovative blend of history and fun technology-based interactive displays. The attraction will act as an important hub for tourists and will signpost visitors to other key heritage sites around the county. On the wider castle site, the story of Haverfordwest Castle will be told and a refurbished Haverfordwest Museum within the Governor’s House will focus on the local town story. There will also be an events space for theatre, music and other events such as fayres in the inner bailey. Improved access to the castle will be from Castle Square with new way-marking throughout the town to encourage visitors. The design scheme will include the new signature bridge over the Western Cleddau at Riverside.
Community consultation to date has told us that out of the 1000 people who were surveyed 88% of Haverfordwest residents support redeveloping the castle as a visitor attraction, home for the town museum and community space. Local people believe Pembrokeshire County Council’s plans will make Haverfordwest a better place to live, work and visit.
The scheme is currently being funded by UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund with match funding from Pembrokeshire County Council. Further funding is being sought for the fit out of the attraction and associated community activities.
