Jacket potatoes
Choose smaller potatoes to be able to cook in a limited amount of time. Make sure they are all washed and clean. Get children to wrap their potato in foil and get all ready to go on the fire.
Dampers
Dampers are made with flour and water, you may like to add a little sugar not much though. Children should search for sticks to cook the damper on or you can buy long skewers (wooden) secure the damper to the stick or skewer. Cook in the cinders or in the fire, you will know when they are cooked.
Welsh Cakes
- 225g plain flour
- 85g caster sugar
- ½ tsp mixed spice
- ½ tsp baking powder
- 50g butter, cut into small pieces
- 50g lard, cut into small pieces, plus extra for frying
- 50g currants
- 1 egg, beaten
- A splash of milk
Method
- Tip the flour, sugar, mixed spice, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a bowl. Then, with your fingers, rub in the butter and lard until crumbly. Mix in the currants. Work the egg into the mixture until you have soft dough, adding a splash of milk if it seems a little dry – it should be the same consistency as short crust pastry.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface to the thickness of your little finger. Cut out rounds using a 6cm cutter, re-rolling any trimmings.
- Grease a flat griddle pan or heavy frying pan with lard, and place over a medium heat. Cook the Welsh cakes in batches, for about 3 mins each side, until golden brown, crisp and cooked through.
- Delicious served warm with butter and jam, or simply sprinkled with caster sugar. Cakes will stay fresh in a tin for 1 week
Pasta
Cooking pasta would be lovely to do outside especially in the summer when you can make a fresh pesto from basil, pine nuts and parmesan, a really health option.
Pop Corn
Popping corn, oil, sugar or syrup and a heavy duty pan and containers for the popped corn. Use the little camping stove and pop away. Add a little oil to the pan heat and then add popping corn keep the lid on otherwise it will pop every where.
Kebab Skewers (veg)
Skewers, water, vegetables, chopping board, cooling tray, brush for oil and knife (make sure it is supervised), oil. Once veg are prepared then get the children to skewer and brush with oil, put on fire or BBQ to cook (Can be done with fruit too)
Pancakes
Flour, milk and eggs. sugar, jam or other toppings can be used such as vegetables, you will need oil, plates and a frying pan, and use the camping stove. Make batter. Heat oil in pan make pancakes.
Marshmallows
Skewers, marshmallows, fire and off you go.

Make away
Orange Brownies
Cut top off orange and scoop out middle, put brownie or cake mixture in the orange and place the top back on. Cover in foil and place in fire to cook.
