Transferring to Welsh Medium Education

Have you recently moved to Pembrokeshire or would like your child to transfer to a Welsh-medium school? We have dedicated language centres in Pembrokeshire for primary children who have recently moved to the area or would like to move to a Welsh-medium education. Our language centres will support your child’s transition to their new school by providing Welsh language instruction and support.

The purpose of Language Centres is to provide support to latecomers to Welsh so that their acquisition of the language enables them to fully access and participate in Welsh-medium education.
Our Centres are located in the Secondary school for the cluster, one in Ysgol Bro Gwaun in Fishguard, one in Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych, and one in Ysgol Caer Elen in Haverfordwest. They are staffed by a qualified teacher that has a specific skill set as linguists, and are excellent linguistic role models.

All three language centres support latecomers to Welsh with a two year part-time course. The provision is specifically for Key Stage 2 pupils as the immersion practices in the Foundation Phase are effective in supporting pupils that arrive as latecomers during the Foundation Phase. Language centre staff communicate regularly with the pupil’s school, and their parents to discuss pupil progress. Pupils join the Language Centre at any time during the school year in line with whenever they have moved into Welsh-medium education, and so the intake is fluid.
