Waste and Recycling Centres (WRCs)

What is the bag sorting change at Waste & Recycling Centres (WRCs)?
You now need to sort your recyclable materials from your non-recyclable materials before you visit one of our WRCs. This will mean that when you arrive at site, you can easily put material in the correct container.
We provide a dedicated Sorting Area at the WRCs in order to ensure all recyclables are removed before waste is placed into the general waste container.
What does general waste bag sorting entail?
When you arrive at the Waste & Recycling Centre, your general waste bags will be checked to see if they contain anything that could be recycled on site. You will be asked to place the recyclable items in the right containers and the rest of your non-recyclable waste will be disposed of in the general waste container.
Why have you introduced the sorting of general waste bags at Waste & Recycling Centres?
This is the first improvement to our Waste and Recycling services in 2019. A lot of bagged waste is thrown in the general waste container at our WRCs, when it could be recycled.
All Welsh councils have recycling targets to hit and these targets will increase in the coming years. Welsh Government will fine Authorities that do not hit their recycling targets.
For every 1% of the target missed, we will be fined £140,000. Over 40% of waste, in general waste bags disposed at WRCs could have been either recycled or reused.
Who carries out the sorting?
Our on-site operatives check the general waste bags and if it contains recyclable items, they will direct you to the Sorting Area to dispose of it separately.
What sort of things can be recycled out of my general waste bags?
There are a large number of materials collected through our WRCs which can be recycled or reused; these materials are shown below and will need to be removed from general waste bags before they can be disposed of:

- Used engine oil
- Tyres

- Small appliances

What if I am not sure if I can recycle an item or not?
There will always be a member of our team at or near the sorting area. They will able to assist you with any queries.
What if I do not want my general bags sorted on-site?
If you do not wish for your recycling to be sorted from your general waste on-site, you will be asked to take bags home to sort them. The easiest thing to do is to separate this at home before your arrival. We will be checking general waste bags before they can be thrown into the general waste container
Why am I unable take my orange bags to the Waste and Recycling Centres?
Our Waste and Recycling Centres accept all of the items you can currently recycle in your orange bags at the kerbside. The only difference is that any of these recyclable materials will need to be separated and placed in the correct recycling container rather than just disposing of the orange bag as a whole on site, as the main purpose of the centres is to be able to separate out your waste and recycling.
Will this lead to bags just being dumped at/outside Waste and Recycling Centres?
We have an enforcement team who follow up incidents of dog fouling, littering and fly tipping. If bags are dumped at/outside our sites (not in household waste skips) this is fly tipping, which is illegal.
Our enforcement team will investigate anyone found to be fly-tipping/littering and they will be prosecuted. We have CCTV at all our sites and some of our operatives will also be fitted with bodycams.
We are proud of our environment in Pembrokeshire and we will take action to maintain it.
What about sensitive & incontinence waste?
We would ask that if you are disposing of sensitive/incontinence waste that you place this in a separate bag. Our operatives will not ask you to open this separate bag and you will be able to dispose of it in the general waste container.
