Strategic Equality Plan Annual Report 2024-2025

Legislative Context

The general public sector equality duty (PSED), under the Equality Act 2010, requires public bodies to "have due regard" to three aims: eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity between people with protected characteristics and those without, and foster good relations between these groups.

It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of their protected characteristic. This is the term used in the Equality Act 2010 to identify the types of things that affect how people are treated and can mean people may experience discrimination. The law is designed to protect them, they are:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion, belief or non-belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation.

The Council is committed to embedding the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 (opens in a new tab) into all its service delivery and activities. Equality objectives have a significant role to play across all Wellbeing goals. The Strategic Equality Plan complements the Participation Strategy 2022-27 which includes a number of objectives aimed at widening participation in decision making.
