Supporting service children in education

Pembrokeshire County Council is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant (opens in a new tab) and is committed to supporting the unique needs of service children and their families. The Education Welfare Service works closely with SSCE Cymru - Supporting Service Children in Education in Wales (opens in a new tab), to provide tailored support to help service children achieve their full potential, despite the challenges of frequent relocations, parental deployments, or transitions between schools.

Our collaborative approach ensures that service children receive continuity in their education, emotional support, and access to resources that promote their wellbeing and academic success. We work alongside schools, families, and SSCE Cymru to build strong networks that foster stability and resilience for service children throughout their educational journey.

Military Pupil Promise project

The Education Welfare Service in partnership with SSCE Cymru has launched the first Military Pupil Promise in Wales, a pioneering initiative designed to recognise, support and celebrate children from Armed Forces families across the local authority. The project saw almost 70 service children come together to help develop the promise, giving them a direct voice in shaping how schools and the local authority support them. It aims to strengthen understanding of the unique challenges faced by service pupils, such as frequent moves and parental deployments, while promoting consistency, belonging, and emotional wellbeing in education.

Developing a clear local Military Pupil Promise brings schools, families and community partners together to ensure every service child feels valued and supported to achieve their full potential. This initiative also reinforces the local authority’s ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, ensuring that those who serve, or have served, and their families are treated fairly and receive the support they deserve.

Through this project, the local authority demonstrates its dedication to inclusion, equity, and the wellbeing of all children, recognising that supporting service families strengthens the whole community.

As the first of its kind in Wales, the Military Pupil Promise sets a strong example of best practice, and the local authority hopes that other councils across Wales will follow suit, working collectively to build a national culture of understanding, respect and support for service pupils and their families.
