Fitness and Well-being
Exercise Referral Scheme
The National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) is a program of activities designed for those who are currently not active or are exercising less than three times per week. It is also for those who suffer with one or more mild to moderate medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, and depression etc; or have been identified as being at risk of developing these conditions. (Your health professional will have more information).
The scheme involves a referral to a local leisure centre from your health professional, who believes that exercise will help in the prevention, management and improvement of your condition.
How do I get started?
You will need to see your health professional, and they will complete a referral form and send it to us on your behalf. They will have also provided you with a copy. You will then be invited to your local leisure centre or swimming pool for your first appointment.
What does the programme consist of?
On your first visit, the Exercise Referral Team will meet with you to find out a little more about your health history, carry out some basic health checks and discuss the range of exercises that are suitable for you. The activities will be fun and aim to help you become healthier through a range of classes, such as the gym or water based exercises.
When do I attend?
Activity sessions will be available to you throughout the week, including some evenings and weekends. The Exercise Referral instructor will create a timetable of activities suitable for your needs.
What is the duration of the scheme?
Your pre-approved programme will run for 16 weeks, during which time you will be able to attend as many exercise sessions as you like.
How much will it cost?
Exercise sessions under this scheme are £2.00 each.
What will I need to wear?
You don't have to wear any special clothes as long as you are comfortable. It is better to wear soft, flat shoes or training shoes.
Do I need to be fit?
No, exercise can be tailored for different abilities so you will be advised about the level of exercise suitable for you.
What happens after 16 weeks?
Towards the end of your 16 weeks, you will be invited to a follow up appointment to discuss your progress and long term exercise needs. You will then be advised of the range of exercise opportunities and the different pricing options which are available.

Walking programme
The programme is delivered in partnership with the National Parks.
Exercise Professional David Braithwaite and the National Parks Walkability Coordinator Paul Casson offer walks on alternating Tuesday afternoons throughout the year and arrange starting points from various locations in Pembrokeshire.
Both leaders are Welsh Ambulance Service Defibrillator qualified and a defibrillator is taken on all walks. Paul has access to a minibus which he uses to transport any clients without a vehicle to the venues. The meeting area is next to Haverfordwest Leisure Centre in Riflemans field car park.
Physical activity doesn't need to be complicated. Something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life.
Benefits of regular brisk walking can help you:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
- Strengthen your bones
- Lift your mood
- Improve your balance and coordination
The faster, farther and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits

BEVIS - Home Circuit
Keeping active is so important during these times. Use this time to change your routine and prioritise some exercise.
Being active is a very good start for children and young people. Staying fit from a young age means you are more likely to:
- Develop a strong heart and lungs
- Develop strong muscles and bones
- Offset the development of lifestyle related illnesses and conditions such as type 2 diabetes or obesity
- Remain fit throughout you're life
- You will be acting as a good role model to those around you, younger and older
- Develop a positive attitude towards tackling goals and tasks
- Experience a the positive natural mood associated with doing physical activity
- Make new friends, meet new people and try new things
- Enjoy being active as it will be an integral part of your life
Staying healthy
Becoming healthy and staying healthy are two different things. In order to improve your health and remain healthy it is a good idea to make small changes which will be more sustainable than making big unachievable changes. For example, if you are currently doing little exercise start by being active for 10 minutes a day and build up slowly adding more minutes the easier you find it over a period of time. Find an activity you enjoy: doing a fitness class, attending the gym or going swimming are all good options.
What you eat also significantly contributes to your health and similarly making small dietary changes rather than big changes can really improve your health and help to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Swapping white bread for brown bread, adding a small portion of vegetables to your evening meal or making sure you try and eat breakfast each day are all good examples of small changes that can be made.
Remember not to try and change too much to soon - give yourself and your body time to adapt to the new things you are doing. Also change something that you are ready to change and if you find yourself finding it hard to change then ask yourself do you really want to make that change or am I really ready? If not, either keep practicing until you are ready to change or chose something else that you are ready to change. Health and health changes are transient - once you have adapted to a change people usually decide on something else they want to change or achieve, this way you remainhealthy.
Setting a goal can be a really good way of maintaining your motivation to remain healthy. It could be an important date such as a wedding or an activity such as running the race for life. These are often specific and achievable goals toy uo. You might also want to get additional help and support to help you on your health journey. Telling your family and friends what you are doing is really important so they can encourage you and may even decide to become healthier themselves! Also asking a member of the fitness team to write you a specific programme can help you meet your needs and goals.
Being healthy is fun, being healthy is achievable, be healthy for life with Pembrokeshire Leisure!
