Exercising at home

Take advantages of any opportunities you have to exercise within your house, or garden if you have one. You may already have some equipment you can use, plus there is a wealth of TV and online based exercise classes and session you can join in with. Our Pembrokeshire Leisure team has also been busy putting together a range of online resources for you. The Pembrokeshire Leisure You Tube channel is free and available for anyone, not just members of Pembrokeshire Leisure 

Pembrokeshire Leisure members can also access a free 60-day trial of Les Mills On Demand. This platform offers over 800 home workouts to enjoy from yoga based sessions (Body Balance) to HIIT training (Grit Series) and is suitable for beginners and fitness fanatics alike. 

Technogym's Mywellness app with Pembrokeshire Leisure is an online app where people can join for free, view and take part in daily workouts, moves and challenges. More than 300 members have joined Mywellness app since its release. All members registered with an active email address should have received an information email about the extra resources. 

Outside your home

If you go out to exercise alone, or with others from your household / support bubble, you are reminded to stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people at all times. You should also keep your dog(s) away from other people and other dogs. The best way to do this is to keep them on a short lead. Please remember to clean up after your dog(s).

Positive mental health and well-being

There are many ways that you can look after your mental health and this doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take up loads of your valuable time. Everyone can follow this advice. Why not start today with:

  • Talking about your feelings which is important for good mental health and helps you to deal with times when you feel troubled
  • Keep active and remember that regular exercise helps boost your self-esteem, concentration and sleep as well as helping to keep the brain and other vital organs healthy.
  • Eat well for mental health – just like other vital organs in our body our brain needs a mix of nutrients in order to stay healthy too. A diet that’s good for your physical health is also good for your mental health. 
  • Drink alcohol sensibly – for some pome people drinking helps to cope with fear or loneliness, but it’s not a good way to manage difficult feelings and often when it wears off you may feel worse.
  • Keep in touch with family or friends to boost your mood - there’s nothing better than catching up with someone face to face, but at the moment that may not be possible due to the COVID-19 restrictions so maybe give them a call, drop them a note, or chat online instead. The important thing is to keep the lines of communication open: it’s good for you and it’s good for them too! 
  • Ask for help - none of us are immune to low mood and we all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we are feeling especially if things don’t quite go to plan!  If things are getting too much for you look or ask for help. 
  • Take a break if you can - a change of scene or pace is good for our mental health. - It could be a five-minute pause from cleaning your kitchen, a half-hour lunch break at work, or a weekend exploring somewhere new. A few minutes of “me time” is so important and can be enough to help you through a difficult time.
  • Do something you’re good at – maybe something you love to do but have not had time  - doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it, and achieving something this way is said to boost both your mood and self-esteem.
  • Accept who you are! and that we are all different – maybe learning a new skill, visiting somewhere new or making new friends can boost your confidence. 
  • Care for others – family and friends are really important to us all and we can help each other and show how much we care in lots of ways.  There is lots of really helpful information and advice on looking after your mental health available to you locally and nationally including the following:

Young people and mental health

The UK government has issued guidance for parents and carers on supporting children and young people’s mental health and well-being during the coronavirus outbreak.

Mental health charity, Young Minds, also provides information, advice and practical support on mental health during the coronavirus outbreak for young people and parents.

Plan ahead 

Be prepared to stay at home this winter in case of poor weather and/or the need to self-isolate. Make sure your kitchen cupboards are well-stocked and you have basic first aid items. Remember that any pets will also need to be looked after, so you’ll need stocks of food and bedding for them as well. Avoid multiple trips to the shops if you can. Use home delivery services if available or get some help if you need it.

Keep warm

Wearing more layers is the best way to keep warm. Exercise can also keep you warm in winter. It’s important not to sit still for too long. Move around at least once an hour if possible, even wiggling fingers or toes will help. Try to heat your home to a steady and comfortable temperature throughout the day.

Many people are injured every year by falling in their own homes and the risk increases with age, but fear of falling can also be a major worry for some people. However, there are some simple steps that you can take to reduce your risk of falling at home.

Eating well can also help ward off numerous diseases and health complications, as well as help maintain a healthy body weight, provide energy, allow better sleep and improve brain function.

Get reading

Opening a book and immersing yourself in its content, whether it be a romantic novel, or a sci-fi story, will help you to escape from the stresses of everyday life. Reading also has the physical benefits of reducing your heart rate, easing muscle tension and aiding sleep. Think of reading as a healthy and free brain holiday! You can visit our libraries

You can also borrow books from the Reading Well for Mental Health and Dementia, as well as books for children.  Reading Well supports you to understand and manage your health and well-being, using helpful reading.  The books are all recommended by health experts, as well as people with lived experience of the conditions and topics covered and their relatives and carers.

Stay connected, be kind 

Kindness is infectious and free! Connecting with other people is vital for our well-being. Why not call a friend to say hello, ask if your neighbour needs anything from the shop, or simply offer a smile when out-and-about in your community.
